Laurel House occupies the first two floors of the Super Co-op building at 1905 Nueces Street. Laurel is known for its laid-back culture that values hard work, social interaction and good times. Laurel is located in the West Campus neighborhood on the corner of Nueces Street and Martin Luther King Blvd, a five-minute walk away from UT Austin and several restaurants and bus lines.
Laurel is proud to have a diverse range of members. Our co-op has hosted students from countries such as China, Denmark, Argentina, New Zealand, South Korea, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, and many others. Members hang out in the Laurel Lounge, play basketball and ping pong in the Laurel courtyard, and study together in the common rooms. Laurel maintains a theater room that has full access to Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO. The Super Co-op building also has an exercise room to help keep members fit. Members stay in either a double room (two person room) with a private bathroom or a single room (one person room) that shares a bathroom with one neighbor. Pay laundry facilities are located on site.
Our co-op is student-run with each member performing 4 hours of weekly labor that they sign up for at the beginning of each semester. Our labor duties include cooking, cleaning, and general house upkeep. This makes it possible for members to get more out of their monthly rent like 17 house-cooked meals per week, all-inclusive utilities (water, electricity, internet), access to the Pearl pool and Taos sundeck, complimentary printing and computer access. House activities are facilitated by a team of member-elected officers and direct democratic member participation, which takes place at our Sunday meetings.
Outside of the co-op, Laurel members enjoy exploring Austin’s celebrated food scene, live music dance halls, and nationally-recognized events like Austin City Limits and SXSW. Members also benefit from house activities such as educational and social events, movie nights, holiday celebrations, and the annual Laurel Birthday party in the fall. Laurel Members value a sense of humor by participating in the co-op’s Laurelite LateNite YouTube series and contributing to the co-op’s ongoing quote list. Laurel is a unique place to make lifelong friends, meet people from around the world, and gain valuable living skills.
Laurel is home to mostly graduate and upper-division students, but does not discriminate against freshmen or sophomores who wish to apply. Our co-op provides a mature but exciting atmosphere with many opportunities to put the books aside and have fun with your fellow co-opers. We are always looking for active, social members who want to participate in our community.
